Amazon Web Services (AWS) is currently experiencing a significant outage that has disrupted major online platforms such as Amazon, Alexa, Snapchat, Fortnite, ChatGPT, the Epic Games Store, and Epic Online Services. According to AWS’s status page, several services are “impacted” by technical issues, with the company investigating “increased error rates and latencies” in the US-EAST-1 Region, although users worldwide are also reporting disruptions.
Reddit users have noted that Alexa smart assistants are unresponsive and unable to process requests. Similar issues were observed with pre-set routines like alarms. Other platforms depending on AWS’s cloud infrastructure — including Perplexity, Airtable, Canva, and the McDonald’s app — have also been affected. The exact cause of the outage remains unclear, and Amazon has not provided a specific timeline for full service restoration.
AWS first reported problems in the US-EAST-1 Region at 3:11 AM ET, stating that engineers were working to mitigate the issue and determine its root cause. A follow-up at 3:51 AM ET promised an update within 45 minutes. By 5:27 AM ET, Amazon reported “significant signs of recovery,” noting that most requests were being processed successfully, though some backlogs remained.
This incident follows a history of similar AWS outages in the US-East-1 region in 2020, 2021, and 2023, which caused widespread downtime across numerous platforms before services were fully restored.
